Hannah Evavold and Jade Martin are the 2013 Athena Award winners for Bloomington Jefferson and Kennedy high schools respectively. The award recognizes an outstanding high school senior female athlete.
Recipients of the Athena Award are selected based on both team and individual excellence in sports, school and community involvement. Evavold and Martin will be honored with athletes from more than 50 Minneapolis-area schools at the 41st annual Athena Awards luncheon on May 3 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Evavold is a five-time letter-winner on Jefferson’s varsity softball team, including three years as team captain. In her last four years of regular season, she pitched 329 innings and struck out 388 batters. She is a three-time All-Conference player and two-time All-Section and Academic All-State recipient. Evavold is an All-Metro player in addition to making appearances on All-State First and Second teams.
Evavold is active with her church choir and youth group, and is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, as well as one of the top 10 percent of her graduating class. Evavold will attend the University of Minnesota this fall on a softball scholarship and major in physical therapy.
Kennedy basketball standout Jade Martin is a five-time letter winner and four-time All-Conference selection. She has been a team captain for past three years, a three-time MVP and a 2013 All-Metro first team pick. Martin’s basketball career culminated with the Eagles winning this year’s conference and section championships and a runner-up finish at the state tournament.
Martin has appeared on the academic honor roll each trimester and has earned an academic letter for the past four years. Martin plans to attend Georgetown University on a basketball scholarship and major in business.
